[ARCHIVED] It's National Lead Poisoning Awareness Week

National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week with children

National Lead Poisoning Awareness Week, observed this year October 20 - 26, exists to raise awareness about the dangers of lead exposure and the steps we can take to prevent it. Lead poisoning poses serious health risks, especially for young children and pregnant women, and can lead to developmental delays, learning disabilities, and other health complications. There is no safe level of lead in the blood. Even very low levels in children’s blood are linked to negative effects on intellect, concentration, behavior, and academic achievement.

This week serves as an important reminder for families to be vigilant about potential sources of lead, which can be found in various sources, including older homes, contaminated water and soil, cosmetics, and certain types of pottery / glassware.

The central theme during this week is the urgent need for lead testing—both in homes and for children. About half the homes in the United States built before 1978 have lead-based paint. Exposure can also be caused by drinking water flowing through lead pipes or pipes with lead-based solder. It’s vital for parents to ensure their children undergo regular lead screenings, as early detection can significantly reduce the risk of learning delays and other serious health issues. By identifying potential lead exposure promptly, families can take necessary precautions and make informed decisions to protect their health.

It is critically important to eliminate lead poisoning in our community. The best way to do that is to have your home and children tested. Join the Hopewell Township Health Department in recognizing National Lead Poisoning Awareness Week and learn how to combat lead poisoning by visiting https://www.epa.gov/system/files/documents/2024-09/infokit_nlppw2024_508.pdf. Together, we can work toward creating safer environments, ensuring that every child has the chance to grow up healthy and thrive, free from the harmful effects of lead exposure.
