May is National Lyme Disease Awareness Month, a chance for educators to spread information on how to prevent Lyme and tick-borne diseases. Lyme disease is a bacterial disease transmitted by the bite of an infected tick. It is treatable through antibiotics, but can spread throughout your body if left untreated.
The Health Department urges residents to take necessary steps to reduce tick bites and reduce the spread of Lyme disease. Steps to prevent Lyme disease include using insect repellent, checking your family and pets for ticks, and removing ticks promptly after being outdoors.
