Hopewell Township Mayor Courtney Peters-Manning and the NJ Department of Treasury encourage every eligible taxpayer to take advantage of New Jersey’s expanded Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) program, which can provide anywhere from several hundred to several thousand dollars in tax relief. It is estimated that ¼ of eligible NJ residents miss this opportunity.
Thanks to ongoing changes enacted by the Governor and the Legislature in recent years, more money is available to more people than ever before. In addition to offering one of the most generous state credits in the nation, 40% of the federal EITC, starting in tax year 2021 the minimum age eligibility is expanding from 21 to 18 and also includes seniors over age 65 without dependents. Federally, the maximum credit available to workers without dependents is nearly tripled from previous years thanks to provisions in the American Rescue Plan. 
"The New Jersey Earned Income Tax Credit provides needed financial support to low and moderate-income taxpayers,” said Mayor Peters-Manning. “I hope that all eligible Hopewell Township residents will take advantage of this program."
To be eligible for the NJEITC, a taxpayer must:
- Meet all qualifications for the federal earned income tax credit, except for the minimum age requirement
- Be a resident of New Jersey who works or earns income
- Have a qualifying child or be at least 18 years old
- Meet the income limits for their filing status
- Have a valid Social Security number for all family members listed on the tax return
