[ARCHIVED] MPX Update

Public Health logo

On August 4, 2022, the United States declared the current outbreak of monkeypox a public health emergency. As of August 10,th New Jersey has reported 277 cases.

The spread of monkeypox (also referred to as “MPX”) is different than the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic:

  • There is a vaccine for MPX and it can be treated with available antiviral medicines.
  • While COVID-19 passed easily from person to person, MPX does not spread as easily between people. Monkeypox transmission typically requires skin-to-skin contact, direct contact with body fluids, or prolonged, close face-to-face contact.
  • While MPX cases are increasing across the country, the general population is currently at low risk of contracting the disease.

Residents who may be at higher risk for MPX exposure should schedule a vaccination appointment. For more information about eligibility and clinic locations please visit: https://www.nj.gov/health/cd/topics/monkeypox.shtml
